A shameful spot on Italy's history is the 'tradition' known as rehabilitation marriage, whereby a woman must marry the man who raped her, thus restoring her own reputation and exonerating the perpetrator. In 1966, Franca Viola was one of the first girls to say no to this cruel and sexist custom - her story inspired Viola Ardone's novel Oliva Denaro. Oliva has the courage and perseverance she needs after refusing to marry her rapist. It is a decision in Sicily in the 1960s that will affect not only her but her whole family.
